Is Your Caribbean Business Invisible to AI Search? What PR Has to Do With It

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overview for "best PR agency in the Caribbean" or "top villa management company in Barbados," and look closely at what comes back. Is your business there? Is the description accurate and current? For many small and mid-sized businesses, the answer may be no — and there's no published data yet that measures how widespread that is in the Caribbean.

What is clear is that the way people find businesses is shifting, and the shift has a name: Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO.

Search is changing

For two decades, visibility online largely meant ranking on a Google results page that a person would click through. That's no longer the full picture, and the evidence now comes from more than one direction. A 2026 SparkToro analysis of Similarweb clickstream data, reported by the industry publication Search Engine Land, found that 68.01% of U.S. Google searches between January and April 2026 ended without a click. Separately, using a different method, the Pew Research Center tracked the browsing behavior of 900 U.S. adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025: when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional search result link in 8% of visits, versus 15% when no summary appeared. Pew also found 26% of visits with a summary ended the browsing session, compared with 16% without one.

Those are two studies measuring two different things — one a zero-click rate across searches, the other a per-visit click-through rate — and they shouldn't be read as the same number. But they point in the same direction using independent methods.

Both studies are U.S.-only. We found no equivalent published study measuring zero-click or AI Overview prevalence in Caribbean search markets, and we won't pretend otherwise. The same platforms - Google, Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity - are available across the region, but how Caribbean users rely on them hasn't been measured in the sources we found.

What affects whether an AI engine "knows" your business

Academic research is starting to examine what makes content show up in AI-generated answers. A Princeton-led study first released in 2023 and revised in 2024, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (Aggarwal et al.), found that applying generative-engine-optimization methods to source content could boost that content's visibility in AI-generated responses by up to 40% in controlled benchmark testing. The authors note that effectiveness varies by domain and no single tactic works everywhere — it's a ceiling figure from a benchmark, not an expected real-world result for any one business.

We cite that figure deliberately, with its caveat intact. No credible agency - including Hard Beat - can promise your business a specific ranking or guaranteed appearance in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or any other AI system. What the research does support is a more modest claim: how information about a business is written and presented can affect whether, and how, AI systems use it.

Where PR comes in

AI answer engines generate responses largely by drawing on information that already exists - websites, news coverage, press releases, directory listings and other public sources. When that information is thin, inconsistent, or outdated, an AI system has less reliable material to work with, and its answers may omit a business or describe it inaccurately.

Building and maintaining that public information is core PR and strategic communications work.

AEO as part of PR and communications - not a separate product

Hard Beat Communications is a regional Caribbean public relations, advertising and strategic communications agency. Its services include media relations, press and launch events, media buying and ad placement across TV, radio, print and online, digital content marketing and branding, and multicultural marketing campaigns. At Hard Beat, AEO is approached as part of that work rather than as standalone software. Learn more about Hard Beat's AEO & AI Visibility services.

A press release picked up by an established outlet, a consistent company description across your website and third-party listings, an accurate and current "About" page, steady media coverage — these build reputation with people. They are also among the public sources AI answer engines can draw on when generating answers about your business.

What this looks like in practice

Hard Beat's approach to AI visibility starts with an assessment, not a ranking promise: what does the public information about your business currently say, where are the gaps or inconsistencies, and which of those can PR, advertising, and content work address? From there: assess → identify gaps → strengthen authoritative information through PR, media relations and content → recheck over time.

For a Caribbean hotel, DMC, professional-services firm or growing brand wondering why an AI assistant doesn't seem to know it exists, that's a practical communications problem to work on - not something that requires buying a separate AI tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO is the practice of making a business's public information clear, accurate, and authoritative so that AI answer engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) are more likely to find, understand, and accurately cite it when answering a question. It differs from traditional SEO, which optimizes for a ranked list of clickable links.

Is AEO a separate technology service, or part of what a PR agency already does?

At Hard Beat, AEO is approached as part of its regional PR, advertising, and strategic communications work - media relations, press distribution, ad placement, and consistent brand messaging - rather than as a standalone software product.

Can a PR or marketing agency guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview?

No. No credible agency can guarantee placement, ranking or citation inside any specific AI system. A credible AEO engagement assesses current information gaps, strengthens the public information AI systems can draw on, and rechecks over time — without promising a specific outcome.

How is AEO different from traditional SEO?

SEO optimizes a webpage to rank in a clickable results list. AEO focuses on whether an AI system's generated answer — which may require no click — includes and accurately represents your business. The two overlap but are not the same discipline.

Why does PR matter for AI visibility?

AI answer engines largely generate responses from existing public information, such as news coverage, press releases, websites and directory listings. PR and communications work creates and distributes much of that information, so gaps or inconsistencies there can carry through to what AI systems say about a business.

My business doesn't have a large marketing budget. Is this still relevant to me?

It can be -especially for small and mid-sized businesses without an internal communications or SEO team monitoring how they're represented online. Hard Beat's free AI Visibility Score is one low-cost starting point.
